Straight from the Bizarre Mind of David Hicks...
Songs
Okay, so they are more like melodies...  In fact I almost called them "Songs for the Shower" because they are nice little tunes to sing when you are going about your day.  While I'd love to create at least four-part harmonies, I'm just not there yet.  But for all you musical geniuses who would love to help develop these songs, please contact me at the email in the footer and let's see what God can do!

SEEK THE LORD

THE THINGS IN MY HEART

November 13, 1998.  This was my first attempt at a song.  It figures that the theme would be seeking God, because seeking Him is what I call "the third greatest command."  Jesus named the greatest two commands as Loving God and then loving one another.  Seeking God is to me the 3rd greatest because it leads us to love and much, much more.
November 14, 1998.  For those of you know me personally, that's one scarey title.  In all seriousness, the chorus is my favorite part of this song.  I'm amazed at how, when we give our lives to God, He effects, He permeates every part of our lives.  I'm not saying it happened overnight as I had to learn to let God be the God of all of my life, but eventually that is what happened.
Seek the Lord all you nations, all you peoples,
Seek the Lord in every land.
Seek the Lord you broken-hearted, all you afflicted,
Reach for the Savior’s loving hand.

(Chorus)
He was worked to bring you salvation.
He was worked through His mighty love.
He cries, He pleads, come follow Me and be saved eternally.

Seek the Lord oh my soul, with all your heart,
Seek the Lord every day.
Search the Scriptures, plead in prayer,
Seek the Lord in every way.
(Repeat Chorus)

The joy in my heart comes from what You have done.
You’ve given me life through Your perfect Son.
My sins are all gone, and heaven awaits.
It’s serving You that puts this smile on my face.

(Chorus)
All of my life has been touched by You - the reason I live, the things I do.
Glory to You and honor to You.  Blessed be Your name.

The peace in my heart comes from Your guiding hand.
I have no fear of the threats of man.
Temptation is never more than I can bare.
In putting you first I haven’t a care. *
(Repeat Chorus)

The love in my heart comes from love you have shown.
You gave up Your Son my sins to atone.
You revealed Yourself from heaven above.
In obeying You I return this love.
(Repeat Chorus)

*Meaning,  I haven't a worry in the world.

COME TO ME

AS I SIT HERE

December 3rd, 1998.  Okay, so technically I think I was lying on a couch when this song started coming to me.  The gist of what I say in this song is "God, You have blessed me in astounding ways, so let me be completely devoted, completely given over to You."
November, 1998.  Following Satan simply tears one's life apart.  It can happen quickly, or it can be one slow descent into depression, darkness, and madness.  Regardless, it is the call of the loving Son of God that can bring us back from the brink.
I was tired.  I was weak.
Sin was breaking me.
Desperate, without hope,
And at the end of my rope.
Then I heard a voice, calling out.
It was the voice of Jesus, Son of God, the Lamb.
He said,...

(Chorus)
Come to me.
All you weary and heavy-burdened,
And I will give you rest.
Take my yoke and learn of me,
For I am meek and lowly in heart,
And you shall find rest for your soul.

Are you tired?  Are you weak?
Is sin breaking you?
Desperate, without hope,
And at the end of your rope?
Listen and hear the voice, calling out.
It is the voice of Jesus, Son of God, the Lamb.
He’s saying,...(repeat chorus)
As I sit here, and think about my life,
And look upon the past,
I am awed and amazed, by Your guiding hand,
By Your wondrous plan for me.

So fill me with determination to obey
Even when I don’t understand.
And fill me with excitement in sharing Your word,
To show how grateful I am.

As I kneel here, and praise Your holy name,
And thank You in prayer,
I am overwhelmed by Your blessings,
By all You’ve done for me.

So fill me with zeal and passion for doing good works,
In the name of Jesus Christ.
And fill me with perseverance in suffering,
To keep giving You my life.

As I stand here, and preach to the lost,
And speak of Your love,
I am humbled, that I could share You’re word,
That You’d want to use me.

So fill me with Your love for all mankind,
Even those who don’t love me.
And fill me with Your holy anger against evil,
So I can be like Thee.

IT DON'T MAKE NO SENSE
(or "I Can Live")

THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU

January - February 1999.  I love this song because you get to praise God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit all at the same time.  I'm not sure how or why I did the unique ending to this song, but I'm really glad I did. Can you figure out what I did to make this song easier to memorize?
January 23, 1999.  I love the upbeat tempo of this tune. As for the theology, it really doesn't make sense to live for any of the temporary things of live instead of the eternal God who loves us.  Unfortunately the grammar in this song will make the average English teacher cringe and make my beloved grandfather Poppie roll over in his grave.  May they all forgive me.
 All-knowing, perfect God;
Compassionate, Jesus;
Comforter, Holy Spirit -
It is to You we now admit,..

That there is none like You,
In heaven above
And the earth beneath.
There is none like You.

Great and awesome, mighty God;
Humble servant, Jesus;
Helper, Holy Spirit -
It is to You we now admit,..

That there is none who love like You,
In heaven above and the earth beneath.
There is none who love like You.

Patient, gracious, loving God;
Immanuel, Jesus;
Our guide, Holy Spirit -
It is to You we now admit,..

That there is none who care like You,
In heaven above and the earth beneath.
There is none who care like you.

And to You, Holy Three,
We confess we want to be,
We want to be like You.
We want to love like You.
We want to care like You.
We want to live like You.
I can live for sports.
I can live for fame.
I can live for everything but Jesus’ name.
But when I die what will these things mean?
Won’t mean a thing if I don’t see the King.

(Chorus)
And it don’t make no sense to give Him anything,
Give Him anything but your best.
Don’t make no sense to give Him everything,
Give Him everything but all your heart.
He loves us.
He died for us.
He’s beggin’ us to follow Him.
What more could we do than believe, obey, and turn from sin?
(1st time through) So hear me now,...            (go to 2nd verse)
(2nd time through) So listen now,...            (go to 3rd verse)
(3rd time through) One last thing,...            (go to 4th verse)

I can live for fun.
I can live for wealth.
I can live just to please my own self.
But when I die what will my life mean?
Won’t mean a thing ‘cause I won’t see the King.   (Repeat chorus)

I can live for lusts.
I can live for pride.
I can live just to please my own eyes.
But when I die what will my life mean?
Won’t mean a thing but that I won’t see the King.   (Repeat chorus)

I can live for God.
I can live by faith.
I can live walkin’ in His saving grace.
And when I die what will my life mean?
Everything ‘cause I’ll live with the King.   (Repeat chorus)

HELP ME

CALL ME HIGHER LORD

March 1st - 4th, 1999.  In Luke 9:23 Jesus said "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up His cross daily, and follow Me."  So much about following God and Jesus deals with us doing what we instinctively don't want to do.  Indeed, we often have to do the exact opposite of our instinctive desires!  It is out of that lifelong struggle that this song was born.
2003.  This is just a fun, little diddy that asks God for help in overcoming the ruts in which we tend to get stuck.
 Call me higher, Lord.
I'm too content with where I am.
Laziness has got a hold on me.
Please break its grip, and set me free,
So I can fly to greater heights of faith and love and joy in Christ.
Call me higher, Lord, please call me.

Get me out of the thorns, Lord.
I'm throwing my time away.
Worldliness has got a hold on me.
Please break its grip, and set me free,
So I can think of serving Christ instead of cares and pleasures of life.
Get me out of the thorns, Lord, please get me.

Help me to share my faith, Lord.
Too many are lost in sin.
Cowardice has got a hold on me.
Please break its grip, and set me free,
So I can speak the truth in love and lead the lost to heaven above.
Help me to share my faith, Lord, please help me.

Teach me to forgive Lord.
There are people who’ve done me wrong.
Bitterness has got a hold on me.
Please break its grip, and set me free.
So I can love them like you’ve loved me,
treating people like friends and not like enemies.
Teach me to forgive, Lord, please teach me.

Evil is present in my flesh each day
And voices in my head tempt me to go astray.
So with this thought in mind I approach your throne
Asking for strength and guidance that’s not my own.

Help me see what I don’t want to see and hear what I don’t want to hear.
Help me say what I don’t want to say and do what I don’t want to do.

Help me to serve when I want to be served and give when I want to receive.
Help me praise when I want to be praised and listen when I want to speak.
Help me forgive when I want to hold a grudge and love when I want my revenge.
Oh sweet Lord, help me deny myself daily.

Help me to laugh when I want to be mad, and smile when I want to frown.
Help me to comfort when I want to criticize,  and be kind when I want to be mean.
Help me be humble when I want to be proud & be thankful when I want to complain.
Oh sweet Lord, help me deny myself.

(Optional 2nd verse)
The good that I want to do, I don’t do each day.
And the evil that I hate, leads me astray.
So with this war in my mind, I approach your throne.
Asking for strength and guidance that’s not my own.

Help me see what I don’t want to see and hear what I don’t want to hear.
Help me say what I don’t want to say and do what I don’t want to do.

Help me to pray when I don’t want to pray, and sing when I don’t want to sing.
Help me believe when I want to doubt, and trust You when I want to trust me.
Help me bring peace when I want to fight, and share when I want to keep.
Oh sweet Lord, help me deny myself daily.

Help me take a stand when I want to run & hide, and confess when I want to deny.
Help me be quiet when I want to gossip, and think good when I want to think bad.
Help me be patient when I want to be upset, and persevere when I want to give up.
Oh sweet Lord, help me deny myself.

WHEN I SEE YOUR FACE

Love One Another As He's Loved Us

July 23rd - 24th, 2004.  If there ever was a song that I would keep as an acapella solo, this would be it.  It just seems like that is when the song is at its best.  Maybe its just the tune, but then again maybe it's the deep, personal feelings reflected in the lyrics.  Regardless, this is one of my favorites.
April, 2006.  I love the upbeat tempo of this song.  For me it has been a fun song to sing and fun to teach to children / youth.
Jesus looked at the apostles and said,
“Love one another as I’ve loved you.
By this all the world will know it’s true,
If you love one another as I’ve loved you.”

Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done.
You’re the role model of love.
‘Cause love is patient and love is kind,
and You were these things all of the time.

The apostles looked at the people and said,
“Love one another as He’s loved us.
By this all the world will come to trust,
If you love one another as He’s loved us.”

Thank you Jesus for all you do.
You’re the role model of love.
‘Cause love doesn’t boast and love’s not proud,
and You always walked with the humble crowd.

Look at Jesus right now and say,
“I’ll love one another as You’ve loved me.
By this all the world will come to believe,
If I love one another as You’ve loved me.”

Thank you Jesus for all you’ll do.
You’re the role model of love.
‘Cause love doesn’t seek what’s best for itself,
and You chose to die, not to save yourself.

Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done.
You’re the role model of love.
You are the perfect example of love.
You are the definition of love.

When I see Your face, like rivers my tears will all flow down.
When I see Your face, gladly my knees shall bow to the ground.
When I see Your face, all the pain of this life will go away.
When I see Your face, they'll be no hiding my joy in that day.

When I see Your face, I'll see the face of pure love.
When I see Your face, it'll be brighter than all the stars above.
When I see Your face, it's my Father's eyes that I will see.
When I see Your face, I'll see the power that made all things come to be.

When You see my face, may You see a heart filled with love.
When You see my face, may it remind You of Your beloved Son.
When You see my face, may all Your pain from this life go away.
When You see my face, may it fill You with joy every day.

When You see my,..
When I see Your, face.

WHAT A GREAT LIFE

JEREMIAH WAS A PROPHET

Christmas 2008.  I'd like to think that this song was like a birthday present for Jesus.  But in reality, I can't write these songs without God's help, so to be more accurate the present was FROM Jesus, not TO Jesus.  This song is an anti-depressant.  It is a get up and get moving song that helps us appreciate the life God has given us and the opportunities we have to serve Him each day.  This is one song I definitely need to sing more.  Oh, and one more thing, this is my one and only attempt at rapping.  That's probably a good thing.
To the tune of "Joy to the World".  2011(?).  From what I remember I was at Vacation Bible School in the Kingston, Tennessee.  The topic was Jeremiah. I started thinking about the song "Joy to the World" because it begins with "Jeremiah was a bull frog."  I quickly started rewriting the lyrics in order to come up with a VBS song.
Jeremiah was a prophet.
Was a good friend of God’s.
The people never listened to a word he said,
But he kept preaching all of the time.
Oh he kept preaching all of the time,
Saying…

(Chorus)
 “Turn to the Lord,
All you boys and girls now.
Turn all you people from here to the sea.
Turn to the Lord, both you and me.”

Well they hated Jeremiah.
Tried to kill him a time or two.
And though sometimes Jeremiah just wanted to quit,
that was something he would never do.
That was something he would never do.
He said…  (chorus)

Now Jesus was a prophet.
In fact He was the Son of God.
People, let’s listen to the words He said,
‘Cause for us He was crucified.
Yes, for us He was crucified.
So let’s…  (chorus twice)
Ding!  Ding!  The alarm rings!
Jump out of bed.  Let my heart sing.
Throw on my clothes.  Begin a new day.
Drop to my knees and start to pray.

I’ve got a life I want to live!
I’ve got a Savior’s love to give!
I’ve got things I want to do,
just to show my love for you!

What a great life!  What a great life!
I’m forgiven, headin’ home.
With You in me, I’m never alone.
Good works to do that You’ve prepared,
and a faith that I want to share.

O-oh, fight!  Fight!  For what’s right!
So “No” to my flesh.  Keep the prize in sight.
Knowing evil is in my head.
Following the Spirit instead.

I’ve got a life I want to live!
I’ve got a Savior’s love to give!
I’ve got things I want to do,
just to show my love for you!

What a great life!  What a great life!
A game to be played,
A fight to win,
A battle for the souls of men.
And on your side I have a part,
For You, the Lord, have changed my heart.

O-oh, Grow!  Grow!  In my soul.
And I won’t stop ‘til I reach my goal.
Loving what’s right.  Hating what’s wrong.
Knowing my trials are making me strong.

I’ve got a life I want to live!
I’ve got a Savior’s love to give!
I’ve got things I want to do,
just to show my love for you!

What a great life!  What a great life!
Laying aside every weight.
Forget the past.  Embrace the grace.
Setting my mind on things above,
on hope and joy and truth and love.

What a great life!  What a great life!
Deny myself.  Take up my cross.
Help the saved.  Save the lost.
Don’t dare to lift my heart in pride,
Knowing it was for me He died.

What a great life!

JOHN 16:33

WAIT ON THE LORD

2011(?).  I honestly can't remember what motivated me to take John 16:33 and make a song out of it, but I'm glad I did.  I actually wrote two different versions of this song - one is to be sung in rounds and the other is one you can sing by yourself.  The lyrics and timing are slightly different in the two versions.  The version you see below is the individual one.
2008(?).  My apologies as I had wanted to keep the presentation of these songs in chronological order.  I guess you could say my timing is off.  Anyway, the Biblical principle behind this song, waiting for God, is one with which I have struggled and probably all of us have struggled from time to time. God's timing is often not what ours would be nor what we want it to be, and that's a good thing since God's timing is the best.
These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace.
These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation,
But be of good cheer, but be of good cheer.
I have overcome the world.
Said Christ.

Oh…
These things He has spoken to us that in Him we may have peace.
These things He has spoken to us that in Him we may have peace.
In the world we will have tribulation,
But be of good cheer, but be of good cheer.
We will overcome the world.
Through Christ.

These things He has spoken to you that in Him you may have peace.
These things He has spoken to you that in Him you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation,
But be of good cheer, but be of good cheer.
You will overcome the world.
Through Christ.
(Chorus)
I will wait on the Lord and He will save me.
I will cry out in prayer and He will hear me.
I will fight the devil and He will flee me.
I will wait, wait on the Lord.

Sarah said to Abraham,
“Here’s my servant. Take her hand.
She will bare a child in my name
‘cause I’m so tired of this waiting game.”

So Hagar became Abram’s wife,
But all it led to was trouble and strife.
Hagar with child had to flee
‘cause things weren’t the way they were meant
to be.

(Repeat Chorus)

The Israelites all hid in fear.
The Philistine army was everywhere.
Samuel the judge said “Wait for me.”
But Saul the king said “That can’t be.”

So Saul made a sacrifice,
Going against the prophet’s advice.
That is when Samuel came and said
“Saul you should have played that waiting
game.”

(Repeat chorus)

Nebuchadnezzar an idol made.
Then an evil decree he gave.
“Bow before it when the music plays
Or burn in the furnace on the way to your
grave.”

Well Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego,
Refused to what the king had told.
Out of the fire unharmed they came
‘cause they chose to play that waiting game.

(Repeat chorus)

Tempation’s burning inside.
Satan’s filling my head with lies.
“I’ve got everything that you’ll ever need.
So forget about God and follow me.”

Well my God said “Wait on me.
It’ll be worth it.  You will see.
Trust my ways, take my hand,
And I’ll lead you to the promised land.”

(Repeat chorus)
So let us wait, wait on the Lord.
Oh please wait, (pause) wait on the Lord.

CAN YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE OUT THERE?

May 2014.  One of the things I believe that we really underestimate is how emotionally involved, how emotionally invested God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are in us.  This song tries to highlight that emotional investment.

The reference to God NOT turning His face away is from Psalm 22, especially verse 24.  To me it is helpful to know that when His own Son was going through the worst pain of His existence, God was not protecting Himself from pain by turning His face away from Jesus, and I am proud of my God for that.
February 23 - 27, 2016.  I wish there were no reason for this song.  I'd settle for "It's just something I came up with off the top of my head."  Instead, like many other songs, it was sparked by bad news on a bonfire of pain.

You see this song is about broken marriages and how they can be healed.  I wrote most of it not long after hearing of another marital tragedy.  I say "another" because I know of far too many.  May God use this song to save as many marriages, as many families, as many souls as He possibly can.
In the days of Noah, You looked all around.
Sin and violence were everywhere, no good was to be found.
How could your work of art become so mangled beyond repair?
On Your throne, Your heart was greived, Your mind full of despair.

Can you see our God?
Can you see how much He cares?
Can you see how hard He tries?

Can you see our God?
Can you see how much He loves
and the tears in His eyes?
Can you see?

Jesus' good friend Lazarus was now dead.
Afterward when Jesus came, Martha and Mary said,
"Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died."
Jesus saw and felt their pain. Oh, how He cried.

Can you see the Son of God?
Can you see how much He cares?
Can you see how hard He tries?

Can you see the Son of God?
Can you see how much He loves
and the tears in His eyes?
Can you see?

I know sometimes we hurt so bad, our lives are full of pain.
We imagine God way up there, like He's playing a game.
But God is our Father. He sees us as His child.
Jesus is our Brother, who walked the extra mile.
And if you give me a choice, between them and the enemy,
I'll choose the Ones who comfort, who hurt and cry with me.
Can you see?

Jesus prayed in the garden, His sweat like drops of blood.
Betrayed, abandoned, and denied by the ones He loved.
Beaten, mocked, spat upon, scourged and crucified.
God turned not His face away. He heard His cry.

Can you see Father and Son?
Can you see how much They care?
Can you see how hard They try?

Can you see Father and Son?
Can you see how much They love?
and the tears in Their eyes?
Can you see?

(raise pitch)
Can you see Father and Son?
They're holding out Their hands.
They're reaching for you.

Can you see Father and Son?
With compassion in Their eyes,
They want to give eternal life.
Can you see?

Got a call last fall.
Another marriage broken.
His porn and betrayal drove the nails.
A hero turned to villian.

As he began to walk away
And turn his back on the ones he loved,
You could see the tears and hear the fears
As a family cried to God above.

What do you see out there worth the price of your daughters' tears?
What do you hope for, a love fantasy where nothing's real?
What do you hope to gain?  If it's respect you just threw it away.
What could be out there, that you'd throw your wife down the drain?

Shed a tear last year.
Another marriage broken.
Drugs and wine poisoned her mind.
An angel turned to demon.

As she began to drive away
And turn her back on the ones she loved,
You could see the pain and hear the same
As a family prayed to God above.

What do you see out there worth the price of your own sons' tears?
What do you hope for, a love illusion where nothing's real?
What do you hope to gain?  If it's love you just threw it away.
What could be out there, that you'd throw your children down the drain?

God knows life is often hard.  Just ask the man on the cross.
Playin' games with Satan's cycle of pain, only leads to hurt and loss.
So open your mind and go back in time.
Recall the love and the hugs.
Humble yourself.
Turn to God for help,
And make it right with the ones you love.

Got the news today.
Two marriages healin'.
Changed hearts were the start.
Sinners turned forgiven.

As they began to come back home
And turn their face toward the ones they loved,
You could see the joy and hear the noise
As two families praised God above.

What did you see out there?  Nothin' worth the price of my child's tears.
What do you hope for?  A family where the love is real.
What do you hope to gain?  It's what I'll give, not what I'll gain.
Cause there's nothin' out there, that I'd throw my family down the drain.

What did you see out there?  Nothing' worth the price of my wife's tears.
What do you hope for?  A marriage where the love is real.
What do you hope to gain?  It's what I'll give, not what I'll gain.
Cause there's nothin' out there, that I'd throw my marriage down the drain.
Cause there's nothin' out there, that I'd throw my life down the drain.
That I'd throw my Savior down the drain.

Father, forgive us.  We don't know what we do.

WHAT KIND OF LOVE IS THAT?

March 2016.  Okay. So based on the titles of my last three songs I think my next song will be entitled "Why Do I Keep Using Questions For Song Titles?".  Regardless, this song is about teen peer pressure.  It was bad enough when I was growing up in the eighties, but now with the spiritually deadly combination of the internet and cell phones, I can't even imagine what it is like.

A shout-out to Chris Boyce who encouraged me to write more.  If he had not done that, I don't think this song would now exist.
She's 17 and a home-coming queen.
He's the high school quarterback.
Like the girls he's used before, he's pushing her for more.
It's a heated affection attack.

She said "Baby I want to wait. Let's just have a pleasant date.
I'm saving myself for the one."
With anger in his eyes, he scoffed then he replied,
"Girl, I love you. Let's have some fun."

Tell me what kind of love is that?
Use her for sex then throw her out with the trash.
Getting your thrills off breaking their wills.
Your love looks a whole lot more like a trap.
What kind of love is that?

The very next day a text was sent her way.
He's up to his old tricks again.
It said "Girl take off your clothes and send me a pose.
Show me that I am your man."

She wrote "Baby this prize is not for your eyes.
I'm saving myself for the one."
With anger in his eyes, he scoffed then he replied,
"Girl, I love you. I'm just having fun."

Tell me what kind of love is that?
Expose her to your friends so they'll pat you on your back.
Getting your thrills off breaking their wills.
Your love looks more and more like a trap.
What kind of love is that?

The very next week they're dancing cheek-to-cheek.
An evil look is in his eye.
He pulls out a pill and says "Girl you want a thrill?
Let's go out back and get high."

She cried "Baby no way. This ends here today.
I want to live happy and free."
With anger in his eyes, he scoffed then he replied,
"Girl, I love you. But you're no fun to me."

Tell me what kind of love is that?
Giving her drugs to set her on the addicts' path.
Getting your thrills off breaking their wills.
Your love looks, feels, and smells like a trap.
What kind of love is that?

Love is patient and love is kind.
Love keeps no record of wrongs.
It thinks no evil. It does not boast.
It's a love for which we all long.

The very next thing she's alone and crying.
Her best friend comes to her side.
She begins to tell of the pressure she had felt,
From a boy whose love was a lie.

She said "My friend I'm mad and I'm oh, so sad.
All he wanted was to use me for fun."
With love in her eyes, she smiled then she replied,
"Girl, I love you, but he's not the one."

Her friend then told of a love so bold,
From a man whose best friends were the poor.
He loved the hurting, oppressed and outcast,
Til He was killed by those he opposed.

And she wandered….

What kind of love is that?
Bearing our sins on His whip-torn back.
Not saying a thing to avoid suffering.
His love looks nothing at all like a trap.
What kind of love is that? Mmm-mmm…
What kind of love is that? Oh-oh…
A real love is that.
